About the American Alligator:
The American alligator is a powerful wetland predator native to the southeastern United States, especially the marshes and slow moving waters of Florida’s Everglades. Growing up to 10 -13 feet long, these reptiles spend much of their time basking on the banks or gliding just beneath the surface with only their eyes and nostrils showing. Alligators play a crucial role in their ecosystem by digging “gator holes” that hold water during the dry season, creating vital refuges for fish, birds, and other wildlife. Once pushed toward extinction by hunting and habitat loss, the American alligator has made a remarkable recovery thanks to strong conservation protections, and today stands as a modern success story and an enduring symbol of wild Florida.
