Part of our 2025 Historical Series, this limited release pin depicts a pivotal moment in American history: Dr. Samuel Mudd setting John Wilkes Booth’s broken leg inside his home. The scene is historically based on events following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865, when Booth fled Washington, D.C., traveled through Maryland and Virginia, and (after falling from his horse) sought medical help from Dr. Mudd. The pin’s setting has been recreated as accurately as possible, from the layout of Dr. Mudd’s living room to the period appropriate couch.
About the Event
On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre. Fleeing the scene, Booth was injured during his escape and arrived at Dr. Mudd’s home for treatment. Though his role has been debated by historians, Dr. Mudd was later tried and imprisoned for aiding Booth. He was eventually sent to Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas before he was pardoned by Lincoln's successor. This pin serves as a visual snapshot of a critical moment in the story, a piece of history captured in enamel.
