About the Lighthouse:
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and is one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the United States. The current brick tower, built in 1870, is nearly 200 feet tall and famous for its striking black and white spiral stripes. Its powerful light warns ships away from dangerous offshore shoals that earned the area the nickname “Graveyard of the Atlantic.”
In 1999, the entire lighthouse was carefully moved inland to protect it from beach erosion, a massive engineering project that helped preserve this historic landmark for future generations.
