Historical Significance:
Sacagawea was a Shoshone woman who played a key role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806). She joined the journey as an interpreter and guide while traveling with her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau. As the expedition traveled up the Missouri River and across the western territories, Sacagawea helped communicate with Native tribes, find food, and navigate unfamiliar land. Her presence also signaled peace to others, as war parties did not typically travel with women and children. Her knowledge and calm leadership were vital to the expedition’s success.
