About Axolotls:
Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are neotenic amphibians that spend their entire lives in freshwater instead of leaving the water as adults. They breathe through delicate external gills and their thin skin, which makes them extremely sensitive to pollution from fertilizers, detergents, and heavy metals. Native to the Xochimilco canal system near Mexico City, wild axolotls have declined sharply as wetlands have been drained, fragmented, and contaminated. Because axolotls are an “indicator species,” their struggle signals a much bigger problem for freshwater ecosystems.
